January 30, 2006 - Coach K Stomps Chair; ESPN Remains Silent

CoachK.com

According to sources other than ESPN, Duke's coach Mike Krzyzewski slammed a chair to the floor that bears his name during the first half of this weekend's game against Virginia. Krzyzewski was apparently upset with the play of freshman point guard Greg Paulus, and he vented his frustration by breaking a nearby chair.

Referees did not address the matter, and Mike Patrick of ESPN seemed unhappy that he had to comment on it at all -- even though, according to the Charlotte Observer, the attack on the chair was loud enough to turn heads throughout the crowd. The main topic of conversation at Cameron throughout the halftime period was, in fact, Coach K's behavior.

Many fans at the game made the comparison between their beloved Krzyzewski and his mentor Bob Knight's infamous his chair toss in 1985. It's an interesting teacher-student comparison, and of course there are other similarities between the two men--K's unsportsmanlike abuse of refs is so complete that his face can rarely shown during the action of games; his curses can be easily made out clearly when he's pictured full on.

Instead, ESPN in particular chooses to show him almost exclusively during slowdowns in the action. (When the cameras do show K going after refs, Patrick and Dick Vitale are both careful to make benign comments like, "Mike didn't like that call, did he?")

Have you ever seen Krzyzewski get called for a technical after screaming at a ref? It's been many years. This from a guy who used to openly complain that Dean Smith benefitted from an unfair double standard...

Anyhow, both Knight and K have had contentious relations with the press. Both belittle questioners who displease them, and both expect to be treated more equally than their fellow coaches during post-game interviews. (Krzyzewski, like Knight, is also no fan of the free press. K's famous threats to the Duke Chronicle staff in the mid-1980s are well documented and were also caught on tape.) No big surprise that he refers to Duke as "my program."

I could go on and on about the double standard Duke's coach enjoys, but the more important point is that ESPN has chosen to cover for him and build the Duke program up as a paragon of all things wonderful about college hoops. To hear Vitale and Patrick and Bilas tell it, you'd think Duke didn't offer certain majors that attract the majority of its players, that it graduates all its players (it does not, and according to Sports Illustrated its graduation rate is not the highest in the ACC), and that parents have never voiced displeasure with the way their kids were treated while in Durham.

My point is that if another coach had walloped a chair this weekend, you'd have heard plenty about it. But ESPN needs Duke, and Coach K especially, to be its squeaky clean focal point. By naming Duke its Official Good Guys, ESPN has a built-in narrative that they can sell over and over to its market. It makes great business sense -- build them up as the Yankees even though they've accomplished nothing close to the Bombers (or UCLA's dynasty for that matter) and play every other team off against them.

The only tricky part is making sure that when a Laettner stomps an opposing player, or K chases after a ref screaming that he took the game from his team, or he destroys a chair while enraged, the network needs to gloss over or ignore it and must pretend it never happened. To do otherwise is to risk Duke being seen as what it really is -- a damned good program led by an occasionally raving maniac.

Desmond Watson has no ties to UNC or the ACC. But he did spend two years in North Carolina in the early 1990s, "dealing with the basketball sickness there."

Comments

Mr. Watson has exposed the ugly truth that ESPN wants to keep hidden.

It's gotten to the point where I won't listen to the announcers during an ESPN broadcast. Duke, and UNCCH most of the time, can do no wrong on ESPN, even when they're not playing. If I want Duke or UNCCH information, I will watch their games or read their websites.

I just watch my team's games and listen to the voices in my head.

Coach K is exactly the same as Bob Knight, only slicker. No, that's unfair to Bob Knight. Knight is a big intimidating bully, but he makes no bones about it. K, on the other hand, poses as the reincarnation of James Naismath or John Wooden, when in reality he is one evil son of a bitch. He is the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing. I just want to know what goods he has on his little minions over at ESPN that keeps them singing his praises no matter what he does.

It's the vast, gay, media conspiracy. They control the sports channels just like they control HGTV, E!, and InsideCarolina.com.

RainbowWarrior, I'd certainly have to agree. See my linky.

Coach K has an AMEX commercial. Roy Williams is in the latest Bacardi and Cola commercial (as a dancer) and gets untold royalties everytime Huckleberry Hound comes on Boomerang.

What about all the other coaches? Lute Olson can't even get a gig doing ads for a used car lot. Rick Pitino probably should be doing ads for Mr. Cash, but he can't.

more info on dook's graduations rates:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2005-12-19-graduation-rates_x.htm

Thanks for the link. Duke graduates 50% of its basketball players? I can't wait to hear Dick Vitale sing the praises of those numbers!

I take great exception to the comments in this article about Jay Bilas. I'm no Duke fan, in fact I can't stand them, but that's why I respect Bilas. I'm not just saying that. If you listen closely for bias, he simply doesn't indulge in that crap. He is a real pro and I wish all the "homers" out there acted like him. I wonder if others have noticed this, or if he just gets lumped in all the time with Vitale and the others.

A broken chair? Big deal...

Would you rather have him choke a kid a la Bobby Knight?

Let's go a step further with Vitale and ESPN. How about during a recent Duke game broadcast by ESPN, the cameras showing Vitale's grandkids with J.J. Redick tee-shirts on.

A little bitter guys? Jealously is very unattractive.

It's a valid argument that there is an effort to play down Krzyzewski's behavior. In the 2004 game against Georgia Tech @ Duke, Coach K was given a technical foul with a little over 2 minutes to go in the 1st half.

While he was in Ray Natili's face, bombarding him with profanity, Dick Vitale sang him as a "great humanitarian."

By the way, Knight never choked any kid. Even the tape shows that.

Coach K banging a chair on the ground is no big deal! He was trying to get the attention of Paulus because he was displeased with his play in the first half. Coach K could have been called for a technical if the chair was banged in displeasure at a foul call, but it was not. Yes, Duke gets more airtime on ESPN then anyone else but that is a by-product of their success.

Technical Fouls aren't exclusively reserved for arguing with refs, their for any sign of poor sportsmanship, such as breaking a chair.

Also, it has nothing to do with their success. There are plenty of programs that are more successful than Duke that get far less airtime. Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA and Indiana all have more wins than Duke. All of those mentioned except Kansas have more titles than Duke. UConn has more recent success than Duke, and Michigan State hasn't done so poorly themselves. Success is not the factor here. Duke is a product of their media hype from the likes of Vitale and Mike Patrick.

Do you really think we are bitter and jealous of Duke? If that is your assessment, then you are seriously mistaken. Why would anyone be jealous of a program that is led by a rat (ever seen that how-to sketch?), has players that rarely amount to anything at the next level other than being injured, and is located in ugly Durham? Not to mention Dick Vitale and Coach K share a bed at night. Try coming 10 miles down the road to Chapel Hill, where you have the REIGNING men's NCAA basketball champion!!

Oh by the way, JJ Redick is probably going to choke yet again when it counts, just like he has done his entire career at Duke.

All you have to say is that this article is right on no matter who your favorite college team might be... Duke constantly has a fluffy puff non-conference schedule in comparison of the other so-called powerhouse teams. And don't give me this they play in the ACC crap, look at UNC's non-conference schedule or Wake Forest's or Boston College's or Maryland's year in and year out. Uconn is the best in the country but are treated as second tier. Carolina is the defending National Champions and are slightly ranked though nobody gave them a shot after losing their top 7 scorers. Coach K is a sly rat who uses and abuses his talent while using vulgarity and constant badgering on the sidelines... Find another man (not a coach) who would get this type of positive coverage, let alone media coverage and I'll give you both my lungs. If you don't think their is a media bias with this coach (not team) why are all their games nationally televised, even that crap Princeton or Pepperdine game. Wow now that is a matchup if I've ever seen one!

Jealous does indeed make even the beautiful most foul.

Each of you Duke haters should read Gerald Posner's "Case Closed." In it, he goes through every shred of evidence and rumor surrounding JFK's murder and debunks every myth, even the "taken as truth" nonsense about magic bullets, etc. At the end, you're left with the simplest explanation. No secret cabal or conspiracy of thousands, just one bad man with a gun.

There is no ESPN conspiracy, either. Duke is the best, they bring the crowds, and hyping them is good business. Case closed.

PS: I recommend this reading also: www.dukebasketballreport.com.

Okay, so we don't need your stupid prose at the top. That is exactly the kind of response I would expect from a Puke fan.

And here's to hoping that you actually went to Duke and aren't just some annoying bandwagon fan. Those are the people who have truly sold their souls to the real devil, not the stinkin' blue devil.

But I will say it again, good luck banking on JJ "I love to choke in the NCAA tourney when my team needs me most" Red Dick to carry your team at the end of the year. Maybe he will actually score some points like he is supposed to...

FYI to all, K was T'd up twice in the span of 10 days in 2004, both in games against Georgia Tech.
I'm not trying to defend K here, but when was the last time Roy Williams or Gary Williams was T'd up? It happens extremely infrequently to ALL of the high-profile coaches. And they all, IMO, "work" the refs.

HEY, S. townsend, you dork - you proved the author's point. ESPN does conspire. It is a marketing ploy. Well said. Dimwit.

To the above poster who said Duke plays a weak non-conf schedule:

Please try to make factual statements in support of your bluster, or you will look like a whining, jealous hater.

NC SOS
Team RPI Pomeroy
Duke 5 19
UConn 255 216
UNC 63 120
Maryland 69 206
Wake 73 209
BC 25 227

Great point. Thanks for taking the time.

One season with a strong non-conference schedule doesn't eliminate the whole trend. Puke actually played some tough non-conference games this year, I'll give you that, but that is an exception to the rule. Plus, some of it is coincidental...for example, Georgetown hasn't been good in awhile, yet you just happened to play them this year when they seem solid again. Not to mention Indiana is tanking and didn't seem that great anyway. And I'm suprised not to see someone like Valpo or Delaware on the schedule this year! So you're argument still isn't that great given the circumstances.

Huh. As for past NC SOS, please check out the info on www.kenpom.com. He lists the last several years of this data, and Duke is sometimes better and sometimes worse but generally at least historically as good as all of the teams the previous post mentioned. I don't have time to crunch all the numbers but a quick scan of the past several years bears it out.

As for picking apart this year's schedule, the numbers don't lie. Unless of course you subscribe to the theory that all computers are biased in favor of Duke. That would make sense, too.

Brian, your post above is re-donk-ulous!

Duke's schedule shouldn't count as tough because the tough teams they are playing haven't been strong in past years? And IU is tanking now, so they sucked back when they were winning big games?

Duke haters are human pretzels.

wow S Townsend you are a raging homo. Who in their right mind would try to counter some Duke hating with a link to the DBR? and I still can't believe that other guy tried to bash Duke's non-conf schedule. Texas, Memphis, Indiana, 3 other teams that play in the Big East including one that beat us, travelling to a Temple team that beat Maryland, plus we played giant-killer Bucknell, and in some circles Penn and Valpo are considered to be respectable .. I mean compare that to who Final 4 teams Louisville and Illinois played -- there's really no comparison.
I think Coach K schedules crappy competition for his teams that aren't supposed to be any good, like 2003 and 2005, and who can blame him?

If you could use some brain power other than to try and crunch numbers, you might be able to figure out what I was trying to say. I wasn't saying that Duke's non-conference schedule this year isn't tough...cuz it is. What I was trying to say is that since schedules can often be created a couple years in advance, they scheduled Georgetown when they sucked. So even though it was a very tough game on the schedule this year, I don't think they were planning on it when they originally decided to schedule that game. So it works out in their favor from a SOS standpoint, but is that what they really wanted? Probably not, since they beat you.

And please, when was IU really winning big games? They have sucked for a few years now, and winning one or two this year early on doesn't change that. The last true big win they had was probably when they beat you in the NCAA tourney with a crap squad! Nice free throws Jay Williams, why don't you go hop on your motorcycle again and ride off!

Thank you "Real Duke Basketball Fan" for giving me some real comments to chew on. I really hate number spitters and those who try to tell me to read other books and crap. I agree that their schedule this year turned out very tough, and I would say that you are right in that it is smart to schedule weaker teams when you might not be as strong yourself...that is kind of what UNC has done this year, with the exception of a few tough non-conference games. And could you blame them either?

I am out from this debate now, I have some real work to focus on...it was fun.

Now if only someone could take out JJ Redick, then all would be good in the world!

"Do you really think we are bitter and jealous of Duke? If that is your assessment, then you are seriously mistaken. Why would anyone be jealous of a program that is led by a rat (ever seen that how-to sketch?), has players that rarely amount to anything at the next level other than being injured, and is located in ugly Durham? Good job, anonymous. You sure showed everybody how you're not bitter or jealous.

no I don't blame UNC for their scheduling, especially after what happened when they experimented with going out of conference to play powerhouses like the Iona Gaels. For that matter I don't do very much UNC hating -- last year I even went to their final 4 game and only slit ONE of my wrists after unc took the title.

By the way, if you wanna see clear Pro-Carolina/Anti-Duke bias at ESPN.com, try to pull up the teams' schedules for past years. It conveniently won't let you go back to see Carolina's 2002 season, and don't forget Duke was the winningest program EVER from 1998-2002. (espn wants you to forget)

Does dooook even have a fan base outside of the crazeees? Anyone ever check out their bulletin boards? They even trash their own players I see. They openly admit to one other that latener j.williams d.jones reddick and others r thugs dirty players and embarrassment to that program. I used to have doubts, but if even their own fans say this, then what to think. In all fairness tho, likely those boards r populated with UK & UNC fans. I thought dooookies were homers, but they ain't. They eat their young. The players are just pawns on the chessboard to them. Disgusting. I'd rather be a fan of a losing or struggling team, and its players, than be like those turncoat dooookies.

So we are probably looking at a different section on ESPN.com, but I don't see any team that you can view a schedule earlier than 2002-2003. So there doesn't appear to be any real bias there when that is the same for all teams, not just Carolina. But you will probably send a link to the exact page, but I don't see it.

And to AnonymousDukie, I don't see any point in your comments. I never claimed I was anonymous (all my comments say Brian in case you haven't noticed) nor have I hidden my UNC biases. And I will say it again, why would I be bitter or jealous? With programs like UNC and Duke, I wouldn't think there would be bitterness or jealousy on either end -- just pure hatred!

I do not like Duke because I think a lot of hypocrisy exists within that program. However, slamming a chair in the heat of a game is not a big deal at all. I have broken clipboards or thrown cups of water down on the floor myself when agitated with the play of my team. Coach K gets a total pass on this one as much as it pains me to say so.

anonymous moron: should we try to be more like maryland?

http://www.diamondbackonline.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2006/01/25/43d712eb3955f

Incidentally you can say Duke fans eat their young, or that they act like their s**t don't stink, but you can't say both without admitting that you're a clown.

maybe I'm a clown, but at least I stick up for my team's players, yo yo. I never said you act like your sh** don't stink, reread what I said. I'd rather
dooook fans be homers than to trash their own stars.
But maybe that's just silly ol me.

well, the main criticism of duke fans amounts to them doing the exact opposite of what you're saying, so, whatever..can't win I guess.

That's what i thought too, until I checked out those boards. That's why I questioned if there was a fan base outside the student body===crazies. Like I said, maybe I just stumbled onto a supposedly doook board which in fact contained mostly dooook haters (unc, uk, um.) I can see that you are dedicated to your team, so my apologies for any offense to you.

"Can't win I guess."

Well, maybe the fan base is a bit schizophrenic or something. I don't know. I'm just going by what I read on a doook site. Sorry.

This article was extremely poorly researched. Which makes sense, because it's extremely poorly reasoned as well.

I was at the game about 20 feet from the bench, and I didn't know about the 'chair incident' until I read about it. Who told this guy that it "turn(ed) heads throughout the crowd," or was he there? Strange. PS. Maybe some writers don't like some coaches. For example, here is one writer who doesn't like Jim Calhoon. It happens.
http://www.courant.com/sports/hc-jeffcol0128.artjan31,0,5431437.column?coll=hc-utility-sports

Then back up your reasons why you think the article is poorly researched/reasoned, Anonymous. Point being, what have you got to say to the contrary? Research yourself. And take a better look at Duke's coach because what Desmond Watson is saying here has been clear for a long time, ESPN conspiracy or no: Coach K has a very nasty attitude and that attitude is evidenced via his actions every game and NOBODY EVER CRITICIZES HIM FOR IT.

Brian you sound like a jealous and bitter duke hater. Duke is a great team despite what some people think. We will be watching them play for the National Championship. What do you have against JJ is it the fact that he has become the complete player? Or because he can shoot and make treys from distant zip codes? He will repeat as player of the year then maybe that will shut some of his critics up. He is a great leader and deserves to win a NCAA Championship.

I have read every single article and comment that is posted here, and I think that all of this is just because people are always downing whoever is on top at the current time. I love Duke and the entire Duke Basketball program, however I can admit when my team does something unsportsmanlike, or mean, or when we just flat get out played. Most Duke fans can be REALISTIC when it comes to our team. That does not mean we "would eat our young" or that we " trash our own players". All it really means is that we can be real about what happens. I do not see this in alot of other programs who will defend even the most blantant and mean actions by their players to the death. True fans, of any team, should be able to admit when their team does something wrong. And finally, this all started because Coach K slammed a chair down please, he didn't hurt anyone, or kick anyone in the face, or punch anyone below the belt. Try to see it for what it is, instead of using it to make yourselves feel better for not having a great coach and a superior program.

Poorly researched? Maybe he glosses over some anecdotes without fleshing out the blow by blow, but if he'd done that, you Duke freaks would be screaming Overkill!

To "anonymous moron" : I'm not quite sure what your gripe is. There is a huge Duke fan base outside of the Cameron Crazies. Duke fans absolutely LOVE their players. The players you singled out are tough hard-nosed players, but clean. Sure, there a couple of "fans" there who criticize their players. But this is in no way reflective of the fan base in general. We do back our players 100%. If you have any doubts about this, stop by the DBR message board more often and see. It is fair and balanced, fans from other schools are welcome and indeed participate. Judging Duke fandom (harshly) from a one time visit there will no doubt leave you with a superficial opinion. Trust me, the players are loved and remembered long after they leave. Cheers.

WOW, there are a LOT OF IDIOTS on this!

Woof. Seriously, jealous idiots.

" oh, my back! "

Man, i love this. Unleash the hounds.

I'm no fan of coach K, i say the larger problem is DickieV. Let JJ win player of the year but silence Vital.

Americans love an underdog, and Duke's execellence has made them into the opposite. People just can seem to handle a team that wins and does it the correct way. Jealousy is an ugly attribute, but when Duke routs your team, that may be the only thing you can turn to, I guess.

i luv when dookies use the "jealousy" defense. Yup, everyone is jealous, no other tema has won anything other then dook, UNC didn't really win the NC, it was dook in disguise, and we are all simply pawns of jealousy. The jealous defense is a big reason many, many hate them so much.

Duke fans assume we're all jealous because they listen to ESPN tell them how great they are. Duke's success is wonderful, but as the above poster makes clear, so are LOTS of teams success--and they often win without unpleasant snideness and that awful bully of a coach.

Jealous, no. Disgusted, yes.

How can you say that you are not jealous, when you cannot even type a comment on this board without intentionally (I sure hope it was intentional!) mispelling our name? I would say most True DUKE fans even pulled for UNC last year in the NC game. Most of us want the ACC to do well and will pull for any ACC team in the NCAA tournement. Most ACC fans will, but unfortunatly, not all.

To Desmond Watson: You silly!

To the anti-Duke posters on this board: Thanks! As long as such people exist, it means that Duke is either on or near the top of the college basketball world, that Cameron Indoor Stadium is the Mecca of College Basketball, and all attention (good and bad) is focused on Duke.

I personally would rather hear sophomoric tripe from
teeny-boppers and immature folks than hear nothing at all. Please, please, please let the caterwalling continue!

To true Duke fans: Trying to dissuade bloggy columnists like Desmond Watson from coming up with such *cough*cough* journalism is fruitless. He'd rather get pats on the back from others like him than rely on honesty and an ear for the truth.

Continue, folks.

Desmond, you need to learn how to write....Try backing up your statements w/ empirical evidence. By the way, I hate Duke, but they are by far the best program of the last 20 years and Coach K is easily the best coach

Both Knight and K have choked players...

I was also at the game, maybe 15 feet from the duke bench, and didn't see anything like that happen.

my guess is, coach K lifted a chair and slammed it down or something, and now people are acting like he picked it up and threw it across the court. it's just sad when this is the best you can come up with.

Well, I was 50 feet from the Duke bench, and the rubber stopper from the bottom of the chair may have flown off and popped me in the forehead.

Looks like GoodKingWinceslaus got the last word. He must hold a very high place in the dook imperial court to shut up those preppy gobs. Way to go, King!

I agree with the poster who said Bilas shouldn't be lumped in with the others. I think he does a very good job and is surprisingly objective.

Great reading, keep up the great posts.
Peace, JiggaDigga

This is cool, you have to try it. I guessed 86345, and this game guessed it! See it here - http://www.funbrain.com/guess/
